38 JULY - AUGUST 2014 | LPPORTAL.COM PARTNERING WITH RETAILERS By Dave DiSilva, Manager of Global Asset Protection Where We've Been and Where We're Headed This column is focused on reviewing some of what we have done over the last few months and where we are heading next quarter. The goal is to keep you up-to-date on what is new with our retail outreach and share some success stories. We encourage you to join our LinkedIn page "eBay Partners with Loss Prevention Professionals" to stay informed on the latest eBay PROACT information. Where PROACT Has Been We are constantly seeking opportunities to outreach with our retail partners. One of the ways we do that is through getting out of the office. Here are some recent examples. ■ Presented at the U.S. Secret Service fraud seminar in their Brooklyn New York Office. ■ Participated in the Polk County organized retail crime training. ■ Attended the London Retail Fraud Show. ■ Attended the Dublin Ireland Retail Fraud Seminar. ■ Hosted the National Retail Federation Fusion Center with Macy's. ■ Presented at the Atlanta Cyber Crime Summit hosted by the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators. ■ Presented at the Utah Organized Retail Crime Association (UTORCA). ■ Held retailer webinars on conducting online investigations. ■ Participated in the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) training on how stones are graded, the identification of precious metals, and watches identification and tracking methods Where PROACT Will Be ■ We will present at the Retail Council of Canada LP conference in Toronto, ON, September 10 – 11, 2014. ■ We will present at the Fifth Annual Coalition of Law Enforcement Conference (CLEAR) in San Diego, CA, on Monday October 13, 2014. ■ We will participate in the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC) 10th Annual Impact Conference in Gainesville, FL, October 13 –15, 2014. PROACT Changes We continue to enhance the PROACT program and look for efficiency gains. We are excited to announce for our hundreds of PROACT members, all request submissions will transition from email to our eRequest system through an eBay portal effective August 18. The process streamlines how we receive and respond to requests and ensures requests are channeled to the appropriate investigator. PROACT Cases in the News ■ In April 2014, David Grindle of Boise, ID, plead guilty to defrauding eBay customers and was sentenced to one year in prison with thirteen years of supervised probation and ordered to pay $162,000 in restitution. ■ The Polk County (FL) Sheriff's Office conducted an ORC training week that included a two-day blitz that resulted in 41 people, 32 of whom had criminal records, arrested on ORC-related charges. ■ The leader of an ORC theft ring in York, PA, plead no contest in June to multiple charges and was sentenced to state prison. Police said the man instructed his 137 co-conspirators, who were mostly drug users, on what items to steal from stores in parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland. ■ Three members of a suburban Chicago, IL, family were arrested and charged with interstate transportation of stolen property following a purported five-day shopping odyssey that started in Oklahoma, continued at malls in Texas, and wound through Louisiana before returning to Northbrook. The defendants, together with a cooperating individual who acted as their fence, and others sold merchandise over the past decade that totaled $4.2 million.
